Innovation and Export Performance: Evidence from Uk and German Manufacturing Plants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using comparable plant-level surveys we demonstrate significant differences between the determinants of export performance among UK and German manufacturing plants. Innovation, however, measured has a strong and systematic effect on the probability and propensity to export in both countries. The scale of plants' innovation activity is positively related to export propensity in both countries. In the UK the scale of plants' innovation activity is also related positively to export propensity. In Germany, however, where levels of innovation intensity are significantly higher, a trade-off is evident between further increases in innovation intensity and export probability. Moreover while the determinants of export performance are similar for German innovator and non-innovators significant differences are identified between innovative and non-innovative UK plants. In particular innovative UK plants are found to more effective in their ability to exploit spill-overs from the innovation activities of supplier companies and other firms in their sector. Perhaps reflecting demand-side influences, however, co-location to other innovative firms is found to discourage exporting regardless of plants' innovation performance. Boundary effects on UK and German manufacturing innovation
We investigate how boundaries in knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination influence UK and German manufacturing firms’ innovation activity. Issues of knowledge control related to plant ownership are generally found to be unimportant for innovation, but knowledge sharing between plants affects innovation in UK plants with no in-house R&D capability. More important is that knowledge co-ordina...
متن کاملTHE ORGANISATION OF INNOVATION: Collaboration, Co-operation and Multinational Groups in UK and German Manufacturing
Marked differences exist between the institutional and social context for innovation in the UK and Germany. The question addressed here is how these different contexts impact on the objectives and organisation of innovation in UK and German manufacturing. In particular, we examine the extent to which UK and German plants engage in inter-plant collaboration and co-operation and multifunctional w...
متن کاملLocation and Network Effects on Innovation Success: Evidence for Uk, German and Irish Manufacturing Plants
Recent developments in the new economic geography and the literature on regional innovation systems have emphasised the potentially important role of networking and the characteristics of firms’ local operating environment in shaping their innovative activity. متن کاملOutsourcing in the Innovation Process: Locational and Strategic Determinants
There is now substantial evidence that locational and agglomeration influences can have a significant positive effect on innovation performance. Networking and boundary-spanning activities are also increasingly recognised as important contributors to innovation success. This paper attempts to discover whether these factors are linked: in particular, is there any link between plant location, agg...
متن کاملEnabling Innovation: Knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination boundaries in UK and German manufacturing
We investigate how boundaries in knowledge control, sharing and co-ordination influence UK and German manufacturing firms’ innovation intensity (an indicator of the volume of product change) and product life (an indicator of the pace of generational change). In general UK plants more commonly face knowledge control boundaries related to plant ownership or control, while German plants more commo...
